The Sagara project:
The project began life in 2009 when Diskjokke was commissioned to create a one off piece for top Norwegian festival Øya. He was given free reign as to what this project might entail, and he was given the resources to travel almost anywhere to find the right people to work with.
He researched a seemingly endless list of genres before he finally settled on the Indonesian Gamelan tradition. Soon after he made contact with a group called Sambasunda (led by Ismit Rutchimat). Diskjokke then spent two weeks in Bandung, Java, staying in their studio recording traditional instruments, sounds and ideas. He recorded everything he heard, from the city noise to the pulsating hot mountain springs. He always intended to make this into a dance project, maybe leaning even more towards techno, as he felt gamelan and techno share somewhat a similar aesthetic.
Diskjokke's friend Pete Herbert introduced him to some guys in Jakarta, called The Jakarta Underdub, who convinced him to spend his last week there on Bali where he also met Stevie Gamboa, who lives and works there. As Diskjokke says; "It was only when I got to the island I started realising this would never be a dance concert. It sounds like and probably is a cliché, but that week changed my perspective on music forever. I got home again and really started going through music from a different point of view". It was then that this became the Sagara project.
The album was written, produced and recorded as music in Oslo, but a lot of the sounds used are recorded various places in Indonesia. Instrument recordings from there played on a sampler here and tweaked, but also stuff like the crickets from the Bandung jungle, the waves of Bali etc.
About the influences for the project Diskjokke says: "There is of course no doubt I was affected by becoming a father some months after returning, but it is more the total sum and timing of that and Indonesian impact that made this album sound like it does. It was made through the year in between other projects and when I was finishing it I was moving out from my girlfriend and daughter, so as the last work was done when I was on an emotional roller-coaster."
"I have always been labelled as inspired by Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno, but to be honest I really haven't listened much to them until I tripped over them as part of the research for this project. There is a guy I met on Bali called Gus Till, his ambient water-music was the soundtrack of the first days in our daughter's life and she still recognises it as hers."
On how he sees this album as part of his output; "I feel now in retrospect that this album is a natural step from the last, but it is in no way a final piece - I have no idea where the next record will take me!"
Joachim “Diskjokkee “Dyrdahl is 28 years old. He comes from Svelvik, a small town southwest of Oslo with 5,000 inhabitants, but presently lives in Oslo. Joachim is a classically trained violinist and has played since he was 5 years old. Classical music has always been and continues to be an important part of his life. He became interested in electronic music at the age of 15 when he discovered Norwegian DJ legend Olle Abstract`s radio show, and he’s been hooked ever since. Joachim has for 8 years of studied mathematics, but his studies has been put on whole due to the fact that his music is now taken to much of his time. Together with his friends Prins Thomas, Todd Terje and Lindstrøm, Diskjokke is one of the mainstays in Oslo’s pulsing disco scene. Diskjokke was first discovered by Prins Thomas, who released three tracks on his Full Pupp label. At the same time M.A.N.D.Y, DJ T and the Get Physical gang in Germany signed five other tracks and released two 12"s on their Kindish imprint. He was subsequently signed to Smalltown Supersound who released his debut album "Staying In" to world-wide acclaim in 2007. He returned in 2010 with his second album "En Fin Tid", also this album was similarly well received. In between these two album he put out a compilation of remixes entitled “Discolated” , which included his remixes for Lykke Li, Block Party, Foals, Metronomy amongst others . He's kept up his prolific remix output with reruns for the likes of The xx, David Lynch and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
